Editor's Review

The songs on this set, many of which appeared on the 1956 LP "Merry Christmas from Lawrence Welk", represent some of the very earliest Christmas recordings that Welk put on a full-length album.

Listening to this recording, one gains an appreciation of just how far Lawrence Welk and His Champagne Music Makers would later progress in terms of talent, arranging, and cohesiveness as an orchestra. This is enjoyable listening, but it isn't hard to understand why many of these songs were re-recorded in the 60s with new soloists and a larger, fuller orchestra.

If you pine for the days in which the Lawrence Welk orchestra was somewhat less sophisticated than it was even just a few years later, in the late 50s and early 60s, then this is a recording that you'll enjoy immensely. Otherwise, it is perhaps best left to completists.
